Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 - review of the phone with a slider!
Here it is. New in the Xiaomi stable. Phone with a slider. Nostalgic memories are revived. Will such structures get a second life? What else can the top Xiaomi model offer?
In a word of introduction - the phone is tested on China Rom ("syfmiui"), which, contrary to appearances, does not differ in functionality from the Global version, and in my opinion is better than MiuiPolska. Global will be available over time, so some of the issues discussed here will be outdated.
1Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 box and set
I didn't have all the boxes with Xiaomi phones in my hands, but there were some already. Of all, this Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 box is the largest and heaviest. A large and sturdy cardboard box suggests the contents will be filling too, but it's not.
We have everything in other phones from Xiaomi:
- Instructions, warranty, tray key
- USB-C cable
- USB-C / Jack adapter
- 10W inductive charger (that's just unusual)
- A card with a maxim or Xiaomi's mission
- Plastic Case
There are also no revelations. The front of the box is interesting, with such a structure. When you scratch it, it makes sounds. Also this ... good thing ...
2Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 specification
Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 is undoubtedly the top phone at the moment. On the first step of the podium it is on a par with the Mi8 and its counterpart in the PRO version. Mi Mix 3 comes in several memory variations. From 6GB RAM minimum to 10GB RAM. In my case, it is the 8GB RAM version.
I will not elaborate on, I will present the most important things in the form of a table 😉

The phone is very efficient at the moment and I feel a significant leap in performance in some applications compared to Xiaomi Mi Note 3. All in all, it should not be surprising, because the hardware is newer and more efficient.
3Construction of the Xiaomi Mi Note 3
Whoever watched unboxing and first impressions on our YouTube channel knows - apart from the slider, a new button has appeared. Will it be standard on Xiaomi phones. Time will tell.
But let's start with the basics. Although it is a Mix with a display area of 93,4% and it would seem that along with the slider, the phone will be thicker, it is not.
The thickness of the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 (without the case) is 8.6mm. It is not much. It seems that there is no difference compared to the Xiaomi Mi Note 3. However, it is higher than the Mi Note 3. Which is understandable, because the screen has as much as 6,4 ″
However, the weight of the phone is above average. This is my heaviest phone I've ever had in my hand. Almost 220g can already be felt!
The bottom of the phone does not hide anything unusual - USB-C and the speaker on the right. As far as I know, there is a microphone on the left side.
Here, apart from the tray for two nano SIM cards, we find the MiAI / XiaoAI button. What is this? About this in a moment, but I will say now that for now, it is not available to non-Chinese speakers.
The back of this phone is a significantly protruding camera and a fingerprint sensor.
Fortunately, after wearing the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 in the additional case attached to the set, the situation clears up and the camera is no longer a critical point on the back. The fingerprint sensor is smaller than that of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, but very fast. In my case, after switching from Mi Note 3 to Mi Mix 3, it took a while to get used to changing its position.
The phone also has a place for the notification LED. Very clear. Better than in Mi6 and Mi Note 3. The upper edge of the "frameless" just below the upper bezel (: O) also has a speaker for calls and a light and proximity sensor.
Finally, it's time for a slider - it will be a pain for people who take selfies in bulk and a relief for people who do not like to see their reflection in the front camera.
For me, this is quite a reasonable and good solution. I use the front camera so rarely that I would even rather give it back for a 2.5mm jack socket. More about the slider later.
4Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 performance
The big screen from Xiaomi is the clear performance leader in the Antutu Benchmark ranking. It can easily compete with Huawei Mate 20. On this basis, I can conclude that it is the strongest Xiaomi so far. However, in everyday use, there is no major difference between the much weaker Mi Note 3. If you need high performance, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 is worth your attention.
It is worth remembering that this is only a test - benchmark. It is a measure of performance, but you cannot cling to its performance in evaluation. This is influenced by many other factors, such as e.g. the ROM version. In this case, only ChinaRom is available at the moment, global will probably be there soon. You can try to switch to MiuiPolska, but so far there are some problems with flashing - the phone bootloop.
Usable performance and social media - without reservations. Performance in games - unqualified for me. I beat a few titles even though I'm not a very big mobile player. PUBG on ultra, HD, realistic settings etc - without stuttering.
After all, PUBG has exposed some shortcomings that I have also seen in Elephant U Pro reviewed some time ago. Namely, the point is that some elements are not fully displayed due to the slightly rounded display in the corners.
During an almost hour-long session in PUBG, the phone heated up in the vicinity of the camera. The heat was felt but didn't bother. According to Antutu, the temperature oscillated around 50 ° C.
Podsumowując: I couldn't even make the phone gasp for a moment. Full fluidity is both in games (Mortal Kombat, Need For Speed, Asphalt 8, PUBG) and in the Antutu benchmark. Everyday use is a shame to remember, because it is a breeze for Xiaomi Mi Mix 3.
5Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 battery
Yes, the battery is ridiculously small for a phone like this. 3200mAh in this class of phone is a shot to the knee for me. However, let's look at it from a different angle.
The large Super AMOLED display eats less electricity than IPSy. Other components in the latest versions (WiFi, Bt, etc.). Well optimized Miui10 (even though it's china). A large capacity resource that does not create a load and temperature increase in normal use. In addition, QuickCharge 4.0 technology allows you to quickly charge your phone.
Undoubtedly, games drained the battery the most. With a SOT of 25%, I got a result of 23.4 hours of battery life, but the lion's share of the Mi Mix 3 battery was consumed by games on the biggest screen brightening. Besides, during this time I took a lot of photos and recorded videos. I did not feel much difference from the aforementioned Mi Note 3 whose battery has a capacity of 3500mAh. I am even tempted to say that the Mix 3 performs better.
I also have to mention inductive charging. Charging the phone from 15% to 100% in the case, on the original charger, took practically equal to 2 hours with a penny (actually a minute). I was expecting a better result, but I must admit that I haven't had any contact with wireless charging before, so I don't want to judge. I'll leave it to you.
Podsumowując: At first glance, the battery does not impress with its capacity, but so far in my opinion it is not the weak link of this phone. Time will tell how it will behave in the future. It is known - while new, it works as it should.
6Slider in Xiaomi Mi Mix 3
What a contraption. As soon as I open the screen (or extend the camera?), Memories of using Nokia N95 come to my mind. To quote the classic: "those were beautiful times, I will never forget them" 😉
From the moment I unpacked it from the box, I was practically playing with this slider all the time. Because: firstly, I am the type of person who has to do something to focus (move my leg, snap a pen, slide a slider apart), and secondly, I wanted to make it as quickly as possible.
The lifetime of the slider is estimated at 300 openings! I did not even get close to 10% of this value and in my case I will change the phone faster than I will achieve this result. So far everything is working fine. The screen has no play in any direction.
Does the case bother you? Or is it also sliding apart? Absolutely not. Case is okay because only the screen extends downward. The opening itself is easy to do with your thumb. Neodymium magnets keep everything in place. You can feel the screen opening and rolling back with a characteristic click and a sound made by the phone.
What is hidden under the screen? A dual camera and ... a speaker? Or maybe the front camera microphone? I'm not sure about that.
What about the breaks in the slider? Are they big? The slider must not adhere 100%. How would it slide apart then? The camera and screen would draw each other. There is a little gap, but no slack. I will press a thin sheet of paper, but that's about it. With time, dust and maybe even sand will probably collect there (it depends on who cares). I wonder what cleaning this slider will look like and whether you will hear the grinding of dirt. So far, I take care of the phone and I have not experienced this phenomenon.
Podsumowując: The slider is a much better solution for me than the retractable "block" with the camera shown in the early renderings. The slider in my model has no play, it slides easily and there are no problems with crackling, grinding, closing etc. the action is to be performed by the phone.
7Xiaomi assistant - Mi AI
Mi AI is a user assistant like Google Assistant and Siri on Apple phones. Xiaomi will probably invest a lot of money in its development, since it has a dedicated button in Mi Mix 3. For now, it only works in Chinese. I tried to speak to him myself, but he doesn't understand me. He easily understands messages and commands in Chinese from google translator. So far, I totally don't understand what the phone is saying to me. Some "ficzer" is probably the command "hello, hello, hello", because the phone starts to answer something and laugh.
The advantage of Mi AI is the ability to manage Xiaomi devices that connect to our phone using the Mi Home application. I hope this assistant will gain other languages over time. I like the ability to voice control other Xiaomi gadgets.
You can learn more about the Xiaomi assistant in their next movie 🙂
8The screen in Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 and the body of the phone
Super AMOLED as it SA - captures beautiful black and vivid colors. It's not the same level as Samsung phones, but it's very good. My only concern is that with the reduced brightness of the screen, all this Amoled candy disappears somewhere and I have the impression that I am watching an image on IPS.
The area of the displayed image covers ~ 94% of the area. That's a lot, but there's still much more black space at the bottom than at the top of the screen. What was it meant for and why wasn't the screen more full? Its current resolution is 1080 x 2340 with an aspect ratio of 19.5: 9. In my opinion, you could easily stretch it, or ... currently use touch function keys on the bottom edge.
One more thing hurts me and it applies to all Xiaomi phones. Low dpi. All the icons and bars are huge. It gives the impression that we connected a computer on a 40 ″ monitor and set the resolution to 800 × 600. In addition, the inability to set my own mesh made me feel. 4 applications in a row in this resolution and with such a screen surface ... I count on root and some mods in this direction.
Also, as you can see, the work screen shrinks quite easily in the Mi Mix 3.
What about the viewing angles? They're really good. However, as in the first Xiaomi with Amoled - Mi Note 2, the problem was with a blue shade of white, so here in different angles the screen looks greenish, and you can see a rainbow from above. I do not know if this is a defect of my model, or maybe they all have it. This does not adversely affect use. Looking straight at the screen, it is flawless. Likewise, in direct sunlight, the visibility of the displayed screen is very good. Everything is legible.
Now a bit about the construction itself. Often, densely, I accidentally turned on the Mi assistant (this button on the left). Practically every time I download a case. It is so annoying. You can turn off the key response in the settings, but then its existence is completely unnecessary.
With the ceramic casing and Gorilla Glass (version unknown to me), it goes without saying how terribly this phone is fingering. Dust and fingerprints instantly stay on the phone. This is inevitable and rather standard among new smartphones.
It is also worth investing in a case other than the one from the set. It reminds me of the Sandstone back in Oneplus One. However, plastic is thin and slippery to me. The phone weighs yours and can easily slip out of your hand.
Summary: The image displayed by the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 is very good, but not great in my opinion. There are some shortcomings in my opinion, but that does not mean that what we see causes us to bleed from our eyes. On the contrary. These flaws I mentioned are very subjective.
9The camera in Xiaomi Mi Mix 3
Most of you have been waiting for this fragment the most. That's why I left it at the end hehe 😉
Responsible for the captured image from the rear camera Sony IMX363. The same model as in, for example, Mi Mix 2s. Photos and videos are downright great. Once again I will refer to Mi Note 3 and say that there is a gap between the quality of recorded videos and photos. Finally, the panorama was improved! Nothing fancy, but I did pay attention to it.
The camera application has been unchanged for some time, but it has more options. One of them is the ability to turn on AI when taking photos. Its purpose is to automatically select the scene and photo parameters to the surroundings. Objects are also recognized so that the picture taken is the best possible.
AI successfully recognized the flower and the car. But are the photos better? It's hard for me to say. I can't see any difference in most of the photos taken. A few photos - especially the landscape, are nicer with the AI option.
Night mode - here you can see a significant difference. Sometimes it's a "good change", but sometimes the auto mode photos are nicer in my opinion. The night mode takes a series of several photos in order to stick them into one, eliminating reflections and reflections of light from e.g. lanterns, banners, etc. In practice, however, all photos come out much darker and with a reduced amount of details. You need to know when to use this option.
The movies on Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 are very good. We can choose the H265 and H264 codec (similar to the webcam Elecam Rexsowhich I reviewed a long time ago hehe). Finally, we have a choice between 30 and 60 FPS in FHD and 4K !.
There is, however, something disturbing. When recording at 60FPS in both resolutions, the image is much darker and less detailed. This ailment disappears when we choose 30FPS. I do not know why this phenomenon arises, but I hope that it can be cured with soft.
However, this problem does not exist in good lighting.
Also new is Super Slow Motion 960FPS in 1080P resolution and enabled image stabilization. Unfortunately, only 10 seconds. The recording is not knocking down, AI selects the background music for the recording (you can opt out of it). It is a must see, so I invite you to a video review on our YT channel.
You can talk about the camera for a long time, but it is probably best if it defends itself with photos.
Night photos - normal mode on the left, NightMode on the right
Daytime photos - normal mode on the left, AI on the right
